block a website

To block a website with your host file you first have to know where it is. Click on start then click on run and in the box type what is in the picture below.

Now click ok and an explorer window opens that looks like the picture below.

Locate the file host, as you can see you can't open it. Right click on the file and from the pop up menu choose open. When you do this another pop up appears that looks like the picture below.

Move down this list until you see the program Notepad and click on it twice or click on it once and choose ok at the bottom on the menu. The menu now closes and the file opens to look like the picture below.

Remember that this method will block a website but smart kids can beat it. Below are listed all the entries that need to be entered into the host file to block myspace. I have also made a text file that you can download here that contains them all. Select all of them from below and paste into your host file or download the file, open it then select all and paste into your host file use whichever method is most comfortable for you.

Now under the file menu choose save and then under the file menu choose exit. Now restart you computer and myspace should be blocked. You can do this to block any website just use the 127.0.0.1 followed by the website address. So if you wanted to block facebook your entry would look like.
127.0.0.1 www.facebook.com
To block xanga
127.0.0.1 www.xanga.com

NOTE: The method show here to block a website will work for the average person however,someone who knows their way around a computer can get around this way of blocking a website. The absolute best way of blocking websites is thru the use of software.
